A subgroup of the Amazigh people, the Riffan tribes are originally from the Rif region of northeastern Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla. They are divided into 19 groups or social units: 5 in the west along the Mediterranean coast, 7 in the center, 5 in the east, and 2 in the southeastern desert area. Like many Amazigh tribes, they rely on cultivation, herding, and sardine-seining. Their population numbers around 1.2 million, or 3.2 percent of the Moroccan population according to the 2024 census.
